Community Center park is one of several parks in Chapel Hill that has rubber mat surfacing instead of sand or mulch.

The playground at Chapel Hill's Community Center Park will be closed for two weeks, starting Monday, March 19, so crews can make repairs and improvements to the popular space.

The playground is one of the town's most used and its oldest, according to a press release. Work will include:

  • Replacing some of the older features on the main structure.
  • Completely replacing the rubber fall surface.
  • Making drainage improvements.
  • Appling a vinyl coating to metal parts. This will likely be the last part of the project, according to the release.

The closure may extend beyond two weeks, depending on the weather.

Says the press release: "It is very important that families avoid using the playground during the closure period even if it appears to be ready to use. The rubber fall surface and vinyl coating require time to cure after application. Please honor the closure signs."

The playground is at 120 S. Estes Dr., Chapel Hill.
