Police: Suicidal man pointed gun at officers in Durham parking lot

One man died Wednesday in an officer-involved shooting.

Authorities said the shooting occurred around 8:15 p.m. at the New Hope Commons shopping center. According to police, officers were responding to a call that an armed, suicidal man was driving a red pick-up truck around the shopping center.

It took officers 90 minutes to locate the man. When they found him, they attempted to speak with him. Police say the man then pointed a handgun at them, causing them to fire their weapons.

After the shooting, officers performed CPR on the man. He was transported to a hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Police said the shooting happened near a police car and photos from the scene showed crime scene tape surrounding a large section of the parking lot between Barnes and Noble and Ashley Home Store.

Photos from the scene also showed crime scene tape surrounding a second, smaller section of the parking lot near Walmart.
