Fayetteville police said a man was shot and killed early Tuesday morning during a carjacking along the 200 block of B Street.

Officers responded shortly after midnight to a reported shooting. They found Ricky McMillian Jr. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

McMillian died from his injuries at the hospital. He was 39 years old and a Fayetteville resident.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victim drove to the area of B Street, where someone approached the vehicle demanding his keys at gunpoint. The person shot McMillian multiple times and fled the scene in a white Dodge Challenger Hell Cat with a black hood.

Another man was inside the vehicle during the carjacking. That man has been found safe.

Police provided a photo of the type of vehicle involved.

On Tuesday, WRAL News spoke with Ricky McMillian Sr., the father of the victim.

"Well, the strange thing is that I came out on the porch [Monday] night [at] about [midnight]," McMillian Sr. said. "And, I [saw] lights around there, but I didn't know that was going on."

Nearby construction worker Kevin Lee described what it was like to find out what happened.

"I looked at the news this morning and they just said somebody got carjacked, and I was like, 'wow,'" Lee said.

Fayetteville police said the section of B Street has a history of drugs and gun violence.

"I [am] down here all the time, and I've never seen nothing on this end, but that end there, I don't even go that way," said construction worker Clyde Bunch.

Thretha Chance said her daughter, 22-year-old Maggie Fulmore, was shot to death by her boyfriend in 2021 while in her car. She said gun violence must stop.

"When you lose a child to gun violence, that's something you will never forget because the anniversary for my daughter's death is coming up [on] the 31st of [October]," Chance said. "I don't want any other parent to have to endure or go through what i have been through."
