Baby safe after juvenile abducts 6-month-old from Durham apartment

A 6-month-old girl taken from her mother at their Durham home on Thursday is now safe, according to police.

Around 7:45 a.m., officers with the Durham Police Department responded to Encore at the Park Apartments on Courtney Creek Boulevard.

A mother reported someone with a knife took her baby.

Officers found the baby in a nearby apartment and returned her to the mother. Police confirmed that a 16-year-old girl took the baby and the girl was charged with abduction of a child.

The Durham police mobile command unit was still at the apartment complex around noon. The circumstances behind the abduction are not known.
