For the second year in a row, the Poe Center for Health Education has moved its Terrific Teeth Day online.

Terrific Teeth Day is from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 5. The event is designed for preschoolers to third graders and their families. Plus, it's free!

The annual event is a partnership with the Raleigh Wake County Dental Society and serves as the kick off to Children's Dental Health Month, which focuses on dental health for children ages 5 to 11.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about 20 percent of children aged 5 to 11 years have at least one untreated decayed tooth. Untreated cavities can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning.

During the Feb. 5 virtual event, children will get to see a magic show, decorate tooth fairy pillows, meet a dentist and participate in a read-along.

If you RSVP by Feb. 2, you can pick up a complimentary smile kit which includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, activity sheets, snack ingredients, craft supplies and more. Supplies are limited.

To participate in the event, go to Poe's website to register. The program will take place via Zoom.

Families can also take advantage of free dental treatments for children ages 0 to 16 years old during a special event on Feb. 19. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army Judy D. Zelnak Center of Hope (1863 Capital Blvd., Raleigh), the Raleigh-Wake County Dental Society and Wake Smiles Rotary Club of Raleigh will provide free x-rays, exams, cleanings, sealants and fillings. Appointments are required and spaces are limited.  Call (919) 390-6497 to make an appointment.
