Poe Center hosts puberty-focused talks this month

Puberty is awkward for kids and their parents. It can be a difficult conversation, but it doesn't have to be.

The Poe Center for Health Education is hoping to make it a little easier for families by offering in-person workshops designed for children and a parent or caregiver in their life.

The Guy Talk workshop is designed for boys in 5th through 8th grade. It is planned Aug. 6 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Poe Center at 224 Sunnybrook Road. Guy Talk will explore what happens during puberty, the reproductive systems, proper nutrition and hygiene and online safety. Registration is $25 per family.

There is a Girl Talk workshop planed Aug. 13 at the Poe Center. Girl Talk is is designed for 4th to 7th grade girls and addresses topics including "adolescent growth and development and the physical, social and emotional changes that girls experience during puberty." There will be 3D exhibits, candidate discussions that range from the workings of the reproductive system to the menstrual cycle to feminine hygiene protection. Girl Talk will be held 9 to 11 a.m. at the Poe Center. Registration is $25 per family.
