Authorities in Nash County called off the search Friday night for a plane that may have crashed around 6:15 p.m. in Nashville.

According to troopers, four independent witnesses said they saw a small plane circling in the area of W. Castalia Road and Sykes Road, but authorities did not found evidence of a crash.

Witnessed said the plane vanished into the woods and a black plume of smoke came up from the trees.

"They claimed they saw smoke coming from the plane and multiple circles, and then they think it went down in a back woods," said Chris Bissette, Nash County Deputy Fire Marshal. "Shorty after that we received a second 911 call saying the same thing."

Troopers said a helicopter with night vision was brought in to investigate the incident and search for a plane.

"When you get multiple calls, you have to put a little credibility to it," Bissette said.

Authorities said they contacted surrounding airports and no planes were unaccounted for.

No other information was immediately available.
