The principal of North Pitt High School was charged Wednesday with assaulting a student, authorities said.

Principal Maurice Harris was accused of a physical altercation with a juvenile student in a school hallway after school on Oct. 1, authorities said.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office investigated and presented its findings to the Pitt County District Attorney’s Office, which decided to pursue criminal charges, authorities said.

A local magistrate issued an arrest warrant Wednesday for Harris, 43, of Winterville, on a charge of misdemeanor simple assault, and the warrant was served on Harris outside Pitt County, authorities said.
