Two Pitt County Sheriff's Office deputies were placed on paid leave following a Thursday night shooting in which a man was killed, authorities said.

Deputies went to a home at 5505 Rivercreek Drive in Washington at about 7:45 p.m. in response to a reported domestic incident involving a firearm, authorities said. There, they encountered a 48-year-old man with a gun.

"Deputies engaged the suspect and fired their handguns," a news release from the Pitt County Sheriff's Office said.

The man was killed, and the deputies weren't hurt. Authorities haven't released the names of anyone involved in the incident.

"It’s always an unfortunate situation when we respond to these types of calls, especially with the use of a firearm being brandished and our officers taking the appropriate measures to save their lives and the lives of others," Sheriff Paula Dance said in a statement.

The State Bureau of Investigation was called in to review the shooting, which is standard procedure.
