One man was hospitalized Monday night after his vehicle crashed into an overpass near Selma.

Authorities said a witness reported a pickup truck driving erratically in a westbound lane of U.S. Highway 70 at about 8:45 p.m.

The truck left the road, got inside the guardrail and struck a bridge pillar of the Buffalo Road overpass “at full highway speed,” according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The driver was able to escape the vehicle and was taken to WakeMed.

Engineers with the North Carolina Department of Transportation were on the scene following the accident to inspect the bridge for damage.
