As kids were arriving at Pembroke Elementary School Wednesday morning, someone walked into the school with a loaded handgun.

The school said the person followed a parent into the building.

School staff was able to hold the person in the front office area. A staff member was able to convince the individual to turn over the handgun, and a school resource officer removed the individual from the building.

No injuries were reported.

The Robeson County Sheriff's Office said the school is safe and school can continue as normal.

“We commend staff members for their swift action in this matter," said PSRC Chief Communications Officer Jessica Sealey. "At no time was an employee or student threatened by the individual. When asked to hand the gun over, the individual complied with the request."
