Pepy Cakes owner shares her recipe for success
Stephanie Denton is a mom and the owner of Pepy Cakes Bakery in Fayetteville. She started baking cupcakes as a hobby, but her passion quickly turned into a successful business. Denton, originally from Jacksonville, N.C., spoke with WRAL Family about her business and how she balances life as a mom and entrepreneur.
Can you tell us about your family?
I am a mother of six children and one grandchild. I have been married for 22 years to my husband, Reginald Denton, who also runs a business.
What made you want to open your own bakery?
My husband was the one who inspired me to start baking, and after 10 years of baking from home, I finally decided to open my own bakery.
Who has been your biggest inspiration in your life?
God has been my biggest inspiration. He has taught me how to balance my roles as a mother, wife and businesswoman. I would not be where I am without Him.
How do you juggle being a mom and an entrepreneur?
My advice to mothers trying to live a balanced life is to always keep God first in your life an everything else will fall in order. Take time for yourself an spend quality time with your family.
You have been married for years; what is the secret to a successful marriage?
A successful marriage is built on communication and quality time. Share your thoughts and feelings with each other, and be willing to listen to your spouse's thoughts and feelings as well. Learn about each other's likes and dislikes, and find ways to compromise on things that you don't agree on. Be there for each other through the good times and the bad, and know that you can always count on each other.
What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is making people happy when they bite into one of my cupcakes! It’s so rewarding to see someone enjoy something you made from the heart.
What are your best-selling products?
Sweet potato pie cupcakes, strawberry crunch and red velvet cake are always a hit with my customers.
Give us details of what a 'fun day' looks like for you?
A fun day for me is relaxing doing nothing. I’m always so busy taking care of the kids or my husband or baking cakes, sometimes me just doing nothing is fun for me.
What advice would you give someone who wants to open a bakery?
If you want to open a bakery, make sure you love baking. It's a lot of hard work, time, and money, so you need to be passionate about it to succeed.
What are your hopes and dreams for the future of your business?
Looking forward to maybe owning another location. Always adding new item to my menu an coming up with cake flavors that nobody has ever thought of.
