Pedestrian killed after being struck by vehicle in Smithfield

Smithfield police said a woman was struck and killed by a vehicle just before noon Wednesday.

Smithfield police said a woman was struck and killed by a vehicle just before noon Wednesday.

Hilda Phillips, 85, of Selma, was walking through the parking lot at 721 N. Brightleaf Blvd. when she was struck by a GMC Sierra driven by John Hendricks, 82, of Souderton, Pa., at 11:59 a.m.

Officials said Johnston County EMS and the Smithfield Fire Department responded to the scene and attended to Phillips but she passed away at the scene.

Hendricks has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and received a $5,000 unsecured bond. He is scheduled to be in court Nov. 25.
