Rain showers will taper through evening
Late afternoon thunderstorms rumbled into downtown Raleigh, but there is no threat of severe weather in the Triangle Tuesday, Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel said.
The trough of low pressure that kept showers steady Monday had weakened and drifted to the north and east Tuesday, dumping on the Roanoke Rapids area.
Stream flooding and upwards of two inches of rain had fallen there by 4 p.m., according to WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze.
Any rain activity will rapidly fade after sunset, Maze said.
Temperatures climbed toward the low 80s Tuesday afternoon, and sunshine could sneak through the clouds by the evening commute.
The unsettled pattern stays put Wednesday and Thursday, with the best chance for showers and storms coming late in the day Thursday ahead of the cold front that brought severe weather to the Midwest.
Once the front clears, clear skies and cool temperatures will settle in for the weekend.
"The weather this weekend is really something to look forward to," Gardner said. "We will have temperatures in the mid-70s and much lower humidity."
