Atlantic Avenue reopened Sunday after a water main break closed the road on Saturday.

The water main break was reported Saturday afternoon near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Ingram Drive.

Crews told WRAL News, in addition to the cold, the delay was getting enough dirt to pack the road so it would be safe to drive on.

According to the Raleigh Watch Commander, the road reopened around 11 a.m. Sunday.

WRAL News on Saturday spoke with people living in the area who were caught off guard by the emergency situation.

"Well, I just noticed the water that I had to drive through the water so I was like, what's going on," Elaine Winn, neighborhood resident said.

In the early hours of the water main break, sections of the road resembled a river, particularly Atlantic Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

"I looked out the window, and I was like, it looks like Florida out here; it looks like a flood," Maya Gibbs, a resident, said.

A construction-related water main break near Ingram Drive caused the flood.

"They said they were digging and trying to find the line, and boom, they found the line, and it ended up busting out like that, and that's when everything started flooding and coming down the road," Gibbs said.

The city of Raleigh, public utilities and contractors all worked in stinging temperatures overnight to make emergency repairs.
