A Parkland High School student has been charged with assault after a "disturbing video of an inappropriate and unsettling interaction" between a student and a teacher began circulating on social media.

A student was filmed assaulting an educator Monday at Parkland High School, the sheriff's office said. On Tuesday, a secure custody order was issued for one count of communicating threats and two counts of misdemeanor assault.

"All of us should be outraged when those who educate us can be assaulted," said Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr. "We should hold those who teach and educate our children to the highest regard.

"Our hope and our prayer at the FCSO, is that we recognize, that we as a community, must bring order not only to our community but our children. We are praying for wholeness for those students who witnessed this and the educator involved."

The district said it's investigating the assault.

"This behavior will not be tolerated," said WS/FCS Superintendent Tricia McManus. "At no time is it acceptable for students to put their hands on a teacher in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.

"My focus now is on making sure that our teacher is taken care of and has the support needed to navigate through the lasting effects of this incident."

Parkland High School's Principal Keener called families after the incident on Monday.

"I am calling to let you know that earlier today our administration was made aware of a disturbing video of an inappropriate and unsettling interaction between a student and a teacher being circulated on social media," he said in the call. "The student involved in the video will face disciplinary action in accordance with district policies and procedures."

WRAL News is working to learn what disciplinary action the student will face.
