Two people have been charged with providing alcohol to a Johnston County 18-year-old last weekend who later died in a crash on Interstate 40.

Ivan Miguel Pastrana-Vega was driving at 98 mph on eastbound I-40 when his car struck a deer in the left lane and ran off into center median near N.C. Highway 42 shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday, according to the State Highway Patrol. The car hit a guardrail and overturned, with the roof hitting the support column of the Cornwallis Road overpass, authorities said.

Pastrana-Vega was dead at the scene when a passing driver spotted the wreckage and called authorities a couple of hours later. He was the only person in the car.

State Alcohol Law Enforcement officers said the West Johnston High School graduate had attended a house party in Knightdale the previous night, where he was served alcohol.

Eduardo Sanchez-Benitez, 18, was charged with possessing a mixed beverage under age 18, giving mixed drink to a person under 21 and aiding and abetting underage drinking.

His cousin, Yesica Villafana, 20, was charged with aiding and abetting underage drinking. The party was at her house, according to authorities.

Neither Sanchez-Benitez nor Villafana were in custody Friday evening.
