WRAL anchor/reporter Ashley Rowe on Friday rappelled down the side of the 30-story Wells Fargo building in downtown Raleigh.

The impressive feat was to promote the annual Special Olympics fundraiser "Over the Edge."

Rowe was joined by Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin and Police Chief Estella Patterson in rappelling down the side of the building.

"When the call went out to participate in Over the Edge, I needed to build up a little confidence before I made the commitment," Rowe said.

"After all, 30 stories is REALLY high and I'll be doing it on LIVE television! But then I thought about all the Special Olympics athletes who push themselves beyond their comfort zone."

Rowe is dedicating her effort to cousin's daughter who is affiliated with Special Olympics in Ontario, Canada.

"She has more athleticism than I could ever wish for," Rowe said.

"All the fear I face on Friday will be well worth it if my participation can raise a few extra dollars for Special Olympics North Carolina."

More than 100 others, each of whom raised at least $1,000 for Special Olympics NC, will take a similar plunge on Saturday. Rappels are scheduled every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In all, Over the Edge will raise nearly $150,000 this year to cultivate sports opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Donations are still being accepted.

WRAL is proud to support Special Olympics NC

Rowe is just the latest member of the WRAL News team to go Over the Edge. Other anchors, news and sports reporters have participated in the adrenaline rush fundraiser.
