One year since Parkland massacre, vigils and lawmakers honor gun violence victims

Thursday marks one year since the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

A gunman killed 17 people when he opened fire inside a building on campus.

Vigils around the country will honor the victims and call for ways to prevent gun violence.

One vigil will be at the CCB Plaza in downtown Durham that will honor victims of gun violence, including those at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

A group of state lawmakers plan to introduce legislation Thursday to tighten gun laws in North Carolina.

Last year, in a direct response to the Florida shooting, a House committee on school safety was formed to address concerns from teachers and students.

That panel has made various recommendations to Gov. Roy Cooper, like placing more resource officers in schools, enhancing security and investing in mental health treatment.

Lawmakers are in session for another few months.
