State troopers charged a Wake Forest man with driving while impaired after a two-car wreck early Saturday that killed one man and injured two others.

Trooper Paul Burggraf said Christopher Philip May, 21, was driving a 2008 black Honda Civic east on Ligon Mill Road near Greenville Loop when he drifted into the oncoming lane and collided with another car. Matthew Lyle Achterman, 23, a passenger in May's car, was killed.

May and a 17-year-old passenger were taken to WakeMed, where they were treated for non life-threatening injuries, Burggraf said. No one in the other car was injured.

Troopers said Achterman, who was sitting in the back seat, was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the car in the collision.

May, of 3616 Coach Lantern Avenue, was charged with driving while impaired, driving left of center and felony death by motor vehicle. He was being held under a $50,000 bond at the Wake County Jail on Sunday.

His next court date in Sept. 28.
