One person was killed and two others injured in a four-vehicle crash at Morreene and Erwin roads in Durham on Dec. 22, 2014.

One person was killed and two others injured Monday afternoon in a four-vehicle crash in Durham, police said.

The wreck occurred at Morreene and Erwin roads at about 3 p.m., closing the intersection for three hours.

Police said Jacob Samuels, 18, of Chapel Hill, was southbound on Erwin Road and ran a red light, striking a westbound Duke University passenger van driven by Vincent Davis, 52, of Durham. The impact caused the van to flip on its side.

Two vehicles stopped for the red light in the northbound lanes of Erwin Road were also hit and damaged.

Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. Samuels and Jeanette Ellis, a passenger in the van, were taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of injuries that police said didn't appear to be life-threatening.

Samuels has been charged with running a red light and death by vehicle.
