One dead, one critical in Rocky Mount car crash

The Rocky Mount Police Department is investigating a car crash Thursday morning that left one person dead and another in critical condition.

Officers responded at 7:31 a.m. to a motor vehicle crash in the 3000 block of Sunset Avenue.

Investigators determined that a silver 2008 Mazda 6 traveling west on Sunset Avenue crossed the center turning lane and collided head-on with a gold 2015 Chevrolet Suburban traveling east on Sunset Avenue.

The 18-year-old man driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 15-year-old female passenger in the Mazda was transported to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville in critical condition.

The driver and sole occupant of the Chevrolet Suburban was transported to Nash UNC Health Care in Rocky Mount with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.
