Tuesday, Oct. 10, is an election day in North Carolina, with elections taking place in Cary, Durham and Fayetteville.
Voters in nine counties will go to the polls to cast votes in 30 municipal races. This is the first election where voters will be required to show photo ID in order to vote.

Oct. 10 Election Day: What to know
- Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Anyone waiting in line at 7:30 p.m. will be able to vote.
- Voter ID is now required at the polls.
- Voters will find local races [town, city, county] on their ballot.
- For those holding a general election, there could be a run-off on Nov. 7.
- For those holding a primary, the general election is Nov. 7.
- There are no 2023 races on the ballot for Raleigh. Due to redistricting and COVID-19 in 2021, Raleigh City Council elections were delayed until 2022. The mayoral and city council elections were then permanently moved to even years via Senate Bill 722.
Cary NC 2023 elections
For Cary, this is a general election. In Cary, voters are choosing three council members as well as the mayor. Mayor Harold Weinbrecht is running unopposed.
The mayor and council members are elected every four years, but the elections are split. Incumbents are on the ballots in Council Districts B, D and At-Large. Districts A, C, and the other At-Large seat will be on the ballot in 2025.
Cary’s Community Candidates Forum is now live on the town’s website. Each candidate was given five minutes to share information and their priorities for the town.
Durham NC 2023 elections
In Durham, Tuesday is the primary election.
There are eight candidates on the ballot for mayor. The top two will advance to the general election.
Durham Mayor Elaine O’Neal is not running for re-election after just two years.
There are 12 candidates for the three at-large council seats. Two of the 12 are incumbents [Javiera Caballero and Monique Holsey-Hyman].
The top six candidates will be on the November ballot.
Fayetteville NC 2023 elections
In Fayetteville, there’s a primary for mayor and two City Council seats [2 and 5].
There are four contenders for mayor, including incumbent Mitch Colvin who is hoping for a fourth term. The top two vote-getters in the Oct. 10 primary face off in the general election.
There are 11 candidates for Council seats 2 and 5, including incumbents Shakeyla Ingram and Johnny Dawkins. Seven City Council districts did not require a primary and will be on the November ballot.
