A monument at the gravesite of Elizabeth Edwards honors her connection to a son who died as a teen.

Elizabeth Edwards, who is buried next to her son Wade in Raleigh's historic Oakwood Cemetery, got a new monument there this week.

Edwards was a frequent visitor to Wade's grave site, and she commissioned sculptor Robert Mihaly to create a monument to her son, who died at 16 in a car crash.

As her health deteriorated, Edwards again called on Mihaly to design something for her ultimate resting place.

The image of a public woman's spirit taking flight will feature marble vines connecting her stone to that of her son.

Edwards, who is the wife of former North Carolina senator and presidential candidate John Edwards, died of cancer in 2010.
