North Carolina art park showcases an Army veteran's sculptures
His work is in the town to stay and to be remembered for many generations to come, city officials say.
Lifelong machinist Vollis Simpson worked on his whirligigs every day of the week.
Simpson served in the United States Army Air Corps as a pilot, park officials say. He created his first kinetic motion machine during World War II.
In 2010, the plan to create the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park was announced.
The two-acre park features 30 of Simpson’s whirligigs. Three years after the opening of the park, Simpson died at the age of 94.
The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park is open daily from 5 a.m. to midnight.
