Saving Grace: Wake County animal rescue finds homes for 'last chance' dogs

A Wake County dog shelter now offers a chance to host a puppy in your home. The "Saving Grace Animals for Adoption" calls it an extended New Years weekend "Sleep-Over"

"Saving Grace" in northern Wake County is unlike most dog shelters. The former farm is now a place where dogs and puppies have room to socialize with guests and with each other.

Founder, Molly Goldston says, "It’s a much different environment than what is commonly known as an animal shelter where it’s just rows of kennels and chain links."

Goldston’s non-profit shelter says this weekend is an opportunity to ring in the New Year with a puppy sleepover. "So it gives the dogs a couple of days to be able to go home, get some one-on-one attention," explained Goldston.

It also provides feedback that sleepover hosts can share about the puppy’s experience. Goldston uses that information on their website to help them match dogs for long term care.

Goldston says the over-population of dogs has been a struggle for shelters across the state. "I mean they all need adoption opportunity, but we can only take in so many at Saving Grace."

She added, "This year has been just super challenging because the last couple of years, there wasn’t as many pick-ups by animal control. There was a lot more limited hours for surrendering animals and also a lot less spay neuter."

Meanwhile, the dogs enjoy a happy and active life on the old farm with plenty of room to roam, however, Goldston said, "While we still have a great set up, it can provide good care for the animals, It’s definitely different than being part of a family."

She says "Saving Grace" offers many opportunities for host-sleepovers throughout the year. For more information about fostering a dog, volunteering or donating to help support the shelter: https://savinggracenc.org/
