Harnett County sheriff gives update on bomb threat at Triton High School

Authorities said no credible threat was found after a bomb threat prompted an evacuation at Triton High School in Harnett County on Thursday morning.

Harnett County Sheriff Wayne Coats said a note saying "two bombs, two locations, two days" was found in a bathroom by a student at about 9:20 a.m. The student who found the note brought it to a staff member, who alerted the school resource officer, Coats said.

Coats said the building was evacuated and about 1,400 students were taken to Gentry Primary School across the street.

Authorities said police K9s and law enforcement officers from multiple agencies searched the building as well as vehicles on the property and no credible threat was found, Coats said.

"Unfortunately, when someone makes poor decisions like this, it takes all the resources away from where they need to be in this county," Coats said. "We take all of it as credible until we can decide it is not."

Parents were allowed to pick children up from the elementary school while students who had their car keys were allowed to drive home. Those who remained were dismissed at regular time, school officials said.

Coats said that extra security will be present at the school overnight and all belongings left behind by students during the evacuation will be secured. Superintendent Aaron Flemming said all students will be searched upon their arrival at the building tomorrow.

Authorities said nobody has been charged in connection with the threat, but students are advised to contact authorities if they have any information.

"Somewhere along the lines, these young adults need to be held accountable for the poor decisions that they make. Obviously we want something done with this other than something minor because this is serious," Coats said.
