Lawyers ask judge for more time in Edwards case

Prosecutors and lawyers defending John Edwards against criminal charges say they need more time to get their cases ready.

A joint motion by prosecutors and defense lawyers filed Friday asks a judge to push back the deadline for when motions have to be filed.

The attorneys are also seeking a postponement of the July 15 trial date and a conference later this month to hammer out scheduling issues.

The lawyers say the volume of evidence the prosecutors have to provide to the defense is so large it would be difficult to meet the current motion deadline on Wednesday.

Edwards, a former senator and Democratic vice presidential nominee, was indicted last week on six counts of violating federal campaign finance laws.

He has pleaded not guilty to all counts.
