A woman was killed and her step-father was injured in a shooting in Smithfield on Thursday afternoon, Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said.

The shooting occurred at 4:30 p.m. at 80 Neuse Bend Road, where Elizabeth Holmes Reyes had been living with her mother and step-father after separating from her husband, Aldolfo Reyes, authorities said.

Deputies said they believe Aldolfo Reyes entered the home and shot his wife's step-father, Ben Croft, in the arm and leg before shooting and killing his wife. Croft, who suffered non life-threatening injuries, was able to make it to a neighbor's home to get help.

When deputies arrived at the home, Aldolfo Reyes was on the porch holding an infant and a weapon. He surrendered to police, Bizzell said. The infant, who family members said is the couple's son, was not injured.

Aldolfo Reyes was being treated at a local hospital for non life-threatening injuries, Bizzell said. There is no word on how he was injured.

"He was bleeding when we got here. We do not know where his injuries came from," Maj. Benjie Gaddis said.

Croft was being treated at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Family members said Elizabeth and Aldolfo Reyes had been married for about two years.
