Police: Apparent intruder shot, killed during break-in

Investigators believe that a man was shot and killed while breaking into a house at 2801 Ross Road in Durham early Tuesday, police said.

Officers were dispatched to a shooting call at residence at 3:44 a.m. According to a preliminary investigation, two men broke into the house, and one of the intruders was shot, police said.

The gunshot victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

A second man, Michael Lee Hall, 27, of Durham, was arrested a short time later after a sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle near Cheek Road and Midland Terrace, police said.

Hall was charged with three counts of first-degree kidnapping and one count each of first-degree burglary, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and impersonation of a law enforcement officer.

Investigators have also interviewed several people who were in the home when the shooting occurred. More details, including the names of those who were inside the home, haven't been released.

Hall's first court appearance was set for Wednesday.

Hall was convicted of robbery with a dangerous weapon and first-degree kidnapping in 2000, according to state Department of Correction records. He served a 7-year prison sentence.
