Smithfield officer gets family out of burning house
A Smithfield police officer spotted flames from a house on West Market Street in the early hours of Monday and woke up the sleeping family inside, fire officials said.

The Smithfield fire marshal credited a police officer with getting a family safely out of a burning house in the early hours of Monday.
The officer spotted flames at the 1411 W. Market St. house around 2 a.m., Fire Marshal Paul Whitehurst said. The officer knocked on the door and woke up the family of five, including three children.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control shortly before 3 a.m.
No one was injured, but the family has been displaced.
Whitehurst said it appeared the fire started in a vehicle under the carport and spread to the house.
West Market Street, which is also Business U.S. Highway 70, was closed for a couple hours.
