Raleigh officer involved in wreck

Officers were on the scene of a wreck involving a Raleigh police officer on May 30, 2009 on Athens Drive near Franklin Road in Raleigh.

A Raleigh police officer was involved in a wreck on Athens Drive near Jones Franklin Road Saturday night, police said.

Police said Officer D.V. Naumuk was responding to call around 8:30 p.m. when his police cruiser hit a city-owned SUV coming out of a driveway on Athens Drive. During the wreck, the SUV flipped.

Authorities said two people, whose names have not been released, were in the SUV. The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Rex Hospital, police said. The passenger was not hurt.

Naumuk suffered minor injuries.

Neighbors were startled when a tire flew off one of the vehicles and struck a house.

"It actually hit the window, the frame," resident Monica Oakley said. "It almost sounded like an explosion. It was very loud."

Police were continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
