Thanksgiving offers ideal outdoor conditions
A record number of runners dashed through Raleigh's Ridgewood neighborhood Thursday morning in an annual Thanksgiving tradition, Bruce Bokish, race director announced.
The fifth Ridgewood Turkey Trot raised an estimated $16,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society through registrations for two 8K races, the 1-mile event and a kid's dash.
"Thank you to the 1,800 runners, 100 plus volunteers and 200 plus supporters who came out this morning,” Bokish said.
Sandy Roberts was the men's division winner in the 8K with a time of 24:36. Michelle Howell finished first among women at 30:14.
They were just one group enjoying a beautiful fall day across the Tar Heel State.
It was brisk for those who took to the streets before the feast. Temperatures dipped almost to the freezing mark overnight.
By mid-afternoon, temperatures across the region were pushing towards 60 degrees for the first time this week. The state were largely in the middle and upper 50s, and even Asheville had a reading of 52 degrees. Sunny skies abounded.
The same is on tap for Friday, with a cold front expected to blow in for the weekend.
"A cold air mass could build up in the area Saturday," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said, making a chilly rain a possibility for Saturday evening into Sunday.
