Shoppers take advantage of tax-free 'Energy Star' weekend

People on Saturday were taking advantage of the tax-free sale this weekend on appliances that carry the “Energy Star” label.

“We have to try to save wherever we can and this is one weekend where we can save,” shopper Beverly Prince said.

Prince and husband, James, were looking at refrigerators at Lowe’s in Cary.

“North Carolina probably was looking to hopefully stimulate the economy by providing something back to their tax payers and their customers out in the work force,” Lowe’s manager Michelle Lovell said.

The state General Assembly approved the Energy Star sales tax holiday to promote energy efficiency.

“Energy Star” products are designed to operate more efficiently, resulting in the production of less greenhouse gas. The products also use less energy, saving consumers money on their power bills. The products meet the energy efficient standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

The tax-free weekend runs through Sunday and covers items like washers, freezers, refrigerators and other appliances that carry the “Energy Star” label. Buyers can get a list of those items online or at participating stores.

“A lot of folks thought dishwashers were included, but they’re actually considered a fixture to your home once they’re, you know, attached,” Lovell said.

Other items not on the list are dryers, ranges and microwaves.
