The search is over for a Halifax County man accused of shooting the mother of his 3-year-old and then fleeing with the child early Sunday, Weldon Police Chief Mark Macon said.

Investigators said that Jermaine Anderson, 27, got into a domestic altercation with Stephanie Willis, 33, in a home at 908 Willow Drive in Weldon, east of Roanoke Rapids.

During the fight, Anderson shot Willis multiple times and then left with their son, Macon said.

Willis was taken to Halifax Regional Hospital and then airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. She was listed Sunday in critical condition

Macon said the 3-year-old was later found and placed in the custody of his grandmother. The boy was unharmed.

Anderson turned himself into authorities at about 2 p.m. Sunday.  He was charged with one count of attempted murder and was being held without bond.

Anderson's first court appearance was scheduled for Monday morning.
