U.S. 421 Reopened in Chatham County

An overturned tractor-trailer blocked traffic for hours Tuesday on U.S. Highway 421 in Gulf, just south of Fayetteville Road in Chatham County.

Multiple fire and rescue crews responded to the accident, which occurred just after 9 a.m. when a tractor-trailer from Beasley’s Septic Service out of Durham slid off the road, flipped twice and landed upside down.

The driver, Ray Powell, 50, of Raleigh, was airlifted to UNC Hospital. He was listed in serious condition Tuesday night.

No charges have been filed against Powell.
