Wake County sheriff's deputies are investigating a shooting that witnesses say may have been accidentally self-inflicted.

Brandon Cobb, 20, was shot at about 3:45 p.m. Monday in the back yard of a house on Hidden Hollow Lane near Knightdale.

The house's owner told WRAL that Cobb was visiting her 16-year-old daughter, who was home alone.

The girl said Cobb went into the back yard and fired two shots from a .22-caliber handgun. One shot ricocheted and struck him in the neck, the girl said.

Crime-scene investigators spent hours collecting evidence and searching for clues inside the house and in the back yard.

"It's unsettling. It makes you nervous when you are at work and you come home and see all these police cars and you don't know what to think,” neighbor Sam Clark said.

The victim was transported to WakeMed.  His condition was unknown Monday night.
