State investigators are still sorting details of a police shooting that left a Wilson man dead on Christmas day.

Officers say they were trying to serve felony drug warrants when Yule Monteith Reid took off, shooting at them as he ran.

The officers fired back, killing Reid, 21.

Police Maj. Wayne Lamm said that Officer Rob Weatherford, who shot Reid, has been placed on administrative leave until police and the State Bureau of Investigation complete their inquiry.

Lamm said Weatherford was on patrol when he spotted Reid walking along a street about 5:30 p.m. Thursday and approached him, intending to serve him with outstanding warrants for possession and sale and delivery of crack cocaine.

Reid fled, with Weatherford in pursuit, said Lamm. During the chase, Reid turned and fired a pistol at Weatherford, who shot back, Lamm said. He said Reid was shot at least once in the head, and a handgun was found near where he fell.

Reid was taken to Wilson Memorial Hos pital and transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where he died.
