Many women used to feel forced to choose between giving up their careers or having a family, it's not like that any more. More and more, women are choosing to do both.

According to the census bureau, 55 percent of women between the ages of 15 and 44 went back to work within a year of giving birth. The census also shows those couples having children are having fewer.

Part of the reason for that may be the expense and difficulty couples have finding daycare. The census also found that women who have only one child, or who have a college degree are more likely to go back to work, but the decision to have a family is one more women are opting not to make at all. The census report notes that the number of women remaining childless nearly doubled, from 10 percent to 18 percent.

Working mothers are under more stress than other working women. Duke University Researchers say the extra pressure causes a variety of measurable health problems. More kids do not necessarily mean more stress. In many cases, the study shows, one child is enough.

Surprisingly, neither income nor marital status is an additional stress factor for working mothers.

The stresscanbe controlled, even though being a working mother is a balancing act.
