UNC's Black Student Movement Calls on Chancellor

Some students at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill say they want to make sure minority voices are heard on campus. The Black Student Movement is giving Chancellor Michael Hooker a list of their concerns.

Friday was Black Student Movement Awareness day at UNC. Students planned to remember those who came before them -- those who began the battle for equality, and the organization, 30 years ago.

India Williams is president of the BSM. She says anyone who thinks things are much better now than they were is misinformed.

For three hours Friday afternoon, students presented readings and music to raise awareness of their cause. They then marched to the office of UNC Chancellor Michael Hooker to present him with a list of demands.

In 1968, BSM members presented a list of 22 demands to the school's chancellor. They said the 22 demands presented Friday afternoon were not very different from the earlier ones.

On the list was a demand that a new black cultural center be built on campus.

Earlier this week, students at Duke University staged a sit-in demanding an all-black dorm, and recruitment of more black faculty. UNC students eventually made their way to the Chancellor's office hoping to be heard.

These students say they're determined to make sure their demands are met.
