Halloween Decorating a More Popular Event

Driving around at night has gotten pretty spooky. Seems no matter where you look, you see ghouls, witches, goblins and jack o'lanterns.

It looks like everyone's getting into Halloween this year. WRAL's Wisdom Martin visited a haunted neighborhood in Cary Tuesday night.

Halloween is a big event to many people, especially in the area of decorations, which can get pretty expensive depending on what you buy. Pumpkins, the most simple of decorations, can range anywhere from $10 to $20. Some people said they spend their money on decorations just for the fun.

A cut-off head, a graveyard and tombstones are all common sights at the mall in October. The Halloween Express opens its doors the third week in August and keeps them open until the day after Halloween.

It takes three or four days to set up, and it costs the company a bundle. Manager Gail Campbell says it's all worth it.

The decorations are fun and very rewarding financially. The store averages about $4,000 a day in sales during the season. So who's buying all the stuff? Families like the the Mazurick's, who went all out in a frightening display in their yard. There is a gate, fog, tombstones and every creepy, crawly creature of the night. The set-up cost the Mazuricks quite a bit.

"It costs us probably a thousand dollars to set it all up, but we enjoy spending it," said Walter Mazurick, decorator.

They also decorate all over the house and yard. Mazurick said it takes a lot of money and a lot of time.

Unlike a business, their rewards aren't measured with money.

"I enjoy doing something for the community, we look forward to it every year," said Mazurick.

The Mazurick's didn't have to pay for everything, some items were donated to them.
