South View High School Kicks Off Scholarship Fund at Football Game

A Cumberland County community is moving forward after two officers were gunned down in the line of duty. But, moving forward does not mean forgetting.

South View High School football fans paused for a moment during Friday night's game to honor the two officers their community lost last week.

As action kicked off on the field, the Hope Mills school kicked off a scholarship fund in memory of Trooper Ed Lowry and Deputy David Hathcock.

Fans said they thought the idea was great.

Each year, a scholarship will go to a South View graduate who is the son or daughter of a law enforcement officer or to a graduate who's pursuing a college degree in law enforcement.

South View High School Principal Anthony Parker said he thought the fund will honor the memory of the two officers.

At halftime, the band saluted the fallen officers in song. Two of their peers marched in their memory. It was a touching tribute, but band members were not finished. They passed the hat to help get the scholarship fund off to a running start.
