Highways and byways across the state are already beginning to get crowded. The approaching Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest travel holidays and, if you're headed out, prepare for some delays.

If you are hitting the road.. expect lots of company. More than 30 million Americans are driving somewhere over Labor Day weekend. Be safe and don't speed. The North Carolina Highway Patrol says dozens of extra troopers will watch over the highways across the state.

Morning traffic was heavier than usual, and troopers say things will pick up steadily throughout the day.

Chances are, if you do travel, you will see a lot of troopers stopping people for speeding and to check for other violations. The North Carolina Highway Patrol is putting troopers out every 10 miles along traditionally busy stretches of highway. Sgt. Mike Mills says traffic was moving well Friday morning and that, if everyone is alert and cautious, it can continue that way.

Anyone planning on traveling the state's major highways will be closely watched. Officials in Virgina, South Carolina and Georgia say they have similar plans for placing troopers out on the roads.
