Man Releases Toddler Unharmed

A 33-year-old Wake County man released his 18-month-old daughter unharmed Friday afternoon then slashed his wrist after holding authorities at bay for more than seven hours.

Soon after the girl was released, deputies raided the home and took James Turner into custody after a brief struggle. He was treated for his wrist wound and was in jail by nightfall.

Authorities were called to the home at 5412 Amsterdam Place about 6:30 a.m., after receiving a report about a domestic dispute. Neighbors said they saw James Turner chasing his wife, Vicky, with a knife. Authorities said she was apparently taking a shower when she was attacked. She suffered cuts to her hand which required stitches.

When deputies arrived, Turner was inside the house with his daughter, Christian, and he refused to come out. He allowed authorities to pass milk to the child by raising it up to a second-story window with a stick.

According to court records, Turner was arrested at his house July 2 and charged with first-degree sexual offense. He was charged with statutory sex offense on July 13. Jail records showed that Turner had been released from jail last Sunday.

Turner was charged with two counts of kidnapping and one count each of secret assault and attempted murder. His bail was set at $5.5 million.
