Oxford Holds Reputation as Refuge for Children
Two of the oldest orphanages in the state operate within Oxford's city limits. The homes are still making a big difference in the lives of children in need.
Shauna Holt is one of 7,500 children have walked the campus of the Masonic Home for Children since 1873.
David Grissom runs the Masonic home. He says it's done a great deal of good for many children.
Some children came to the home because they lost their parents. Others, like Roger Barker, came because their parents couldn't control them.
Grissom says the home provides kids with opportunity , fun and fellowship to heal hearts, and busy hands to repair shattered egos.
Residents Holt and Barker say it feels like home to them.
A print shop and other vocational programs prepare many kids for life on their own.
