The family of the slain Sharpsburg police chief gathered Wednesday to publicly thank friends, family, co-workers and strangers for their prayers and outpourings of sympathy.

Chief Wayne Hathaway was shot and killed last week while responding to a domestic disturbance call. Wednesday, his family spoke about the tragedy for the first time.

The Wilson County family says they wouldn't have made it this far without the kindness of friends and strangers. Faye Beddingfield is Hathaway's sister. She said they wanted to thank the entire state.

The police chief's son, Shawn Hathaway (seated in red shirt in family picture above left), said his father will be greatly missed and was greatly admired.

The family expressed special gratitude to those in Wilson, Edgecombe and Nash counties. Sharpsburg is situated near the borders of all three counties.

The four remaining members of the Sharpsburg police force went back to work Tuesday. There's no word yet on when a new chief will be named. That decision will be made by the town council and town manager.

Memorial funds have been set up in both the names of Chief Wayne Hathaway and the second victim in the shooting Gloria Nicholson.

Contributions can be mailed to Triangle Bank, PO Box 123, Sharpsburg, NC, 27878. Be sure to write on your check which fund you wish your contribution go toward.
