Spivey's Corner Noisy Again

If you find loud noises offensive, Spivey's Corner wasn't the place for you this weekend. This tiny Sampson County town was the scene once again of the National Hollerin' Contest -- the 29th to be exact.

The contestants attempted to wail and yell, whine and shout -- oh yes, and holler -- their way into the winner's circle.

Eighty-two-year-old Robey Morgan of Glendale showed just how powerful an octagenarian's lungs can be. His virtuoso performance began with a wail like a siren that gradually shifted into a rendition of "Amazing Grace."

It was Morgan's second time as champion. He also won in 1979.

Kathy Walker of Goldsboro took first place in the women's division with her proficient -- and ear-splitting -- hollering.

The event is staged annually by the Spivey's Corner Volunteer Fire Department. Profits will go towards buying a new fire truck.
