The National Hockey League is still two years away from playing in Raleigh, but soon-to-be fans caught an early glimpse Monday of what their Carolina Hurricanes might look like.

Jim Rutherford, general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, unveiled designs for the team's logo and jerseys Monday. The logo includes a red hurricane symbol with a hockey puck as the eye.

The team's home jerseys are white, away jerseys are red. Both jerseys have the team's red hurricane logo. The design also was shown to members of the Centennial Authority, which will oversee construction and operation of the new arena. The $132 million arena, scheduled for completion in 1999, will be home to the pro hockey Hurricanes and N.C. State University's basketball teams.

The team must submit the logo and jersey designs to the NHL for approval, which is expected in early June.

In related news, the Centennial Authority was meeting in executive session at noon to discuss an agreement with N.C. State University, which has withheld a $22 million payment for construction. NCSU wants to resolve issues involving naming rights and practice availability for Wolfpack teams.
