Worker Rescued from Raleigh Sewer Pipe

A construction worker had a close call in Raleigh Friday night. He was trapped for 90 minutes in a sewer pipe, but was ultimately rescued having sustained only a broken leg.

Tim Simpson, 21, was pinned in a 15-foot hole at the intersection of Salisbury and Kindley Streets in downtown Raleigh. He had climbed down the vertical pipe to check for leaks.

Suddenly, a metal ball that plugs a horizontal pipe broke free, breaking his left leg and trapping him.

Simpson, who works for Park Construction Co., in Morrisville, was taken to an area hospital, where he was also treated for hypothermia.
