Brush Fire Danger To Remain High

If you live in an area that allows you to burn trash or debris near your home, be forewarned. Forestry experts say that the combination of debris from Hurricane Fran and a bit of wind could quickly lead to an out-of-control fire

In the past week, 93 fires have blackened 433 acres across the state. Because of that, forestry experts went to Schenck Memorial Forest in Raleigh to demonstrate how to burn debris safely.

Fire Training Officer Bill Miller said the danger of brush fires will be around for many years.

The year's fire danger seasons typically run from February through April, and again October through December.

If open burning is allowed in your area, experts advise that the area around the debris pile needs to be cleared of burnable trash. Then, if the flames spread, they will be hemmed in by the firebreak.

The pile should be constructed a safe distance from any structures. the fire should not be left unattended. And a garden hose or other source of water should be kept nearby.
